Many flights have been canceled and delayed at airports across the country

Over 300 flights were canceled or delayed at airports across the country, while nearly 100 boats serving the islands were canceled. The icy roads made the morning commute in Seoul extremely difficult, resulting in severe traffic gridlock. Rescue crews were working hard to respond to situations involving fallen trees, shattered signs, and other safety issues.

Seoul residents have been cautioned to “restrict driving and outdoor activities” and to “be careful of fallen trees” by local officials.

Cause of the big snowstorm

The snowstorm has affected South Korea’s capital, Seoul, as well as the central, eastern, and southern areas.

The Seoul Meteorological Agency blamed the severe snowstorm on a “significant temperature difference between the sea surface and cold air.” They estimate that the snow will last until noon on Thursday, with up to 20 millimeters predicted to accumulate.

Faced with this situation, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has directed the Ministry of Transport and Safety to mobilize all necessary personnel and equipment to “minimize potential damage and public inconvenience caused by snow” in order to safeguard people’s safety and quickly fix difficulties.
