Severe weather in the US and Europe may pose issues for airplanes

Large portions of Germany are experiencing severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, black ice, hail, and strong winds on January 4 and 5, according to the German Meteorological Service (DWD).

Risk factors that may result in several delays on flights

During this severe winter, DWD has issued warnings about risky elements that could result in numerous aircraft delays or other aviation mishaps.

The national airline, Lufthansa, has issued a warning that severe weather may cause flight disruptions not only in Germany but also in many other regions, including Austria and Switzerland, according to a VNA journalist in Germany. Operator Fraport said that numerous flights are anticipated to be canceled and delayed throughout the weekend at Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s biggest airport hub.

Road users’ risks as a result of severe weather in the US and Europe

The region between the Black Forest, Lake Constance, and the Bavarian Forest is at danger for black ice, according to the DWD. Because black ice is so slick and hard to see, it can be very dangerous for drivers. In the meantime, the western lowlands are expected to get overnight snowfall, with up to 10 cm (4 inches) falling in a few hours before turning to sleet. Conditions will remain icy, with some places experiencing temperatures as low as -8°C (17.6°F).

Strong winds of up to 100 km/h are predicted in the mountains in addition to snow.

A severe weather warning was also issued by the Met Office

Severe weather warnings for portions of the UK over the weekend were also issued by the Met Office that same day. Heavy snow and hail are expected to fall over most of the UK this weekend, according to two amber and two yellow warnings, which are the second and third highest categories following the red alert.

Road closures, delays in flights and trains, and extensive power outages are anticipated as the nation prepares for a week of severe weather, with up to 30 cm of snow expected in some places.

More than 55 million people in the US are at risk of dangerous storm conditions and icy conditions through January 6 due to a blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service that extends from the central Plains to the mid-Atlantic. Coastal states like Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia have received winter storm warnings or advisories from Montana, which is located in the Rocky Mountains to the northwest of the country.
