The aviation industry serves 2.5 million travelers during the Lunar New Year 2025

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), the overall market passenger travel volume will exceed 2.5 million during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday period, representing a 17.8% increase. International passenger travel will reach 1.35 million passengers, up 23%, while domestic passenger transport will reach 1.14 million passengers, up 12% from the same period in 2024.

Production will grow during Lunar New Year 2025

Vietnamese airlines carried more than 1.67 million passengers, up 12.8%, and approximately 7,000 tons of cargo, up 4% from the same period in 2024. International transport carried more than 536 thousand passengers and 3.6 thousand tons of cargo, up 14% in passengers and 1.1% in cargo compared to the same period in 2024; domestic transport carried more than 1.1 million passengers and 3.2 thousand tons of cargo, up 12% in passengers and 7.4% in cargo compared to 2024.

The number of travelers going through airports nationally has grown

The number of passengers passing through airports worldwide also increased compared to the same period last year, reaching roughly 3.6 million (up 16% from 2024). Passenger volume increased at key airports compared to the same period in 2024, with Tan Son Nhat International Airport receiving approximately 1.38 million passengers (up 7.6%), Noi Bai International Airport receiving approximately 900,000 passengers (up 12%), and Da Nang International Airport receiving more than 381 thousand passengers (up 26%).

Specifically, during the 2025 Lunar New Year vacation, Tan Son Nhat International Airport handled between 824 and 970 takeoffs and landings every day, with an average of 138,000 passengers. The peak day recorded a record on January 24 (ie December 25 – the last working day before the Tet holiday), Tan Son Nhat International Airport operated 1,002 takeoffs and landings (an increase of 10% compared to the same period in 2024), with 152,000 passengers, an increase of 13% compared to the same period in 2024

Increase night flights for Lunar New Year 2025

Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority stated that it has established arrangements for the peak period of the Lunar New Year in 2025. As a result, the Authority has implemented a monitoring system for airline bookings and tickets. Simultaneously, the air transport force is replenished, providing optimal conditions for airlines to add aircraft at peak periods. Airlines have added 15 aircraft, bringing the total number of aircraft in operation to 212.

At the same time, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam will coordinate, regulate, and monitor slot usage, bringing the total number of coordinated flights at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports to 46 or 48 per hour.

In addition to extending night operations on domestic carriers, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has urged airlines to optimize aircraft schedules and increase night flights.

Increase the exploitation of night flights

Vietnam Airlines scheduled 1,500 flights, Vietjet 1,590 flights, and Bamboo 260 flights. Operating night flights helps to alleviate airport congestion, limit delays and cancellations, and fulfill the growing demand for air travel. At the same time, it enables aviation service providers to fairly allocate resources for flights.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, in particular, requested that the People’s Committees of provinces and cities direct relevant departments, agencies, and transportation service providers such as taxis and technology cars to extend operating hours, increase the number of vehicles, and increase the frequency of buses serving passengers, particularly those on night flights to and from the airport. Free buses have been set up at Tan Son Nhat International Airport to take passengers from the terminal to and from bus stations.

In general, transport output for the Lunar New Year 2025 reached a “record” high, particularly at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. However, units in the aviation industry, in the spirit of proactive “early, from afar”, have responsibly developed plans for exploitation and service, adding more human resources, aircraft, and equipment to ensure good service for people’s travel needs; forecasting the situation, operating conditions, coordination, and handling of work between departments to ensure smoothness, efficiency, timely information, and full implementation of responsibilities to passengers.
