Following a string of international air accidents, flying safety is being strengthened
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has just issued a Directive on strengthening measures to ensure aviation safety during the peak Tet holiday of 2025, including requirements to ensure flight safety after many plane accidents occurred around the world in recent days.
Maintain strict adherence to policies, laws, and standard operating procedures to maintain flying safety
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, there have recently been consecutive aviation accidents around the world that have resulted in serious human losses, such as the Jeju Air B737-800 plane crash on December 29, 2024, which killed 179/181 people on board in Korea; and the Azerbaijan Airlines E190 plane crash on December 25, 2024, which killed 38/67 people on board in Kazakhstan.
To ensure absolute safety in civil aviation activities, particularly during the peak period of the Lunar New Year 2025, when the density of aviation activities increases, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam requires aircraft operators to thoroughly train their pilots to strictly adhere to policies, regulations, and standard operating procedures, particularly in adverse weather conditions and complex situations. Strictly adhere to the requirements outlined in the Civil Aviation Authority’s Safety Directives, and instantly notify the flight control center when assistance is required to ensure flight safety.
Plan flights and routes to avoid airspace areas at risk of armed conflict, ensuring the flight’s absolute safety; and proactively monitor weather developments to adjust plans or change flight schedules as needed to reduce the risk of adverse weather conditions affecting flight safety.
Monitor the air traffic condition and arrange flying safety operations
The Civil Aviation Authority mandates the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) to oversee compliance with its orders to Air Traffic Controllers (ATSCs) and other personnel.
VATM must maintain up-to-date meteorological information, including unfavorable weather conditions, to generate effective flight plans and deliver timely information to pilots.
Strengthen air traffic observation and monitoring, plan flight operations, and rapidly discover conditions that could jeopardize flight safety in order to inform and help the crew. At the same time, provide advice on the occurrence or development of weather phenomena affecting flight operations; use meteorological information consulting methods that are simple to understand, use, convenient, and focused, and improve the effectiveness of assisting airlines, pilots, and air traffic controllers.
Improve inspection and control of vehicle activities about flying safety at the airport
The Civil Aviation Authority requires Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) and Van Don International Airport to strengthen supervision of vehicle operations on airport grounds, detect violations of safety regulations promptly, and coordinate with the airport authority to strictly enforce violations.
Strengthen inspection, collect foreign objects, chase away birds operating in the airport area, and strictly control to prevent pets from entering the flight area; collaborate with the Airport Authority, local authorities, and competent agencies to promptly prevent laser beams, illegal use of flycams, drones, and kite flying around the airport area that endangers flight safety.
The Director of the Civil Aviation Authority urges that the heads of agencies and units take this directive carefully. If any difficulties or suggestions arise throughout the implementation process, units must promptly report them to the Authority for guidance.
