Singapore Changi Airport’s Strong Air Cargo Performance in 2025

Singapore Changi Airport’s Strong Air Cargo Performance in 2025

Singapore Changi Airport recorded one of its strongest air cargo years on record in 2025, reinforcing its position as a leading air freight hub in the Asia-Pacific region. The airport handled 2.08 million tonnes of cargo, representing a 4.5 percent year-on-year increase, despite ongoing volatility in global trade and logistics markets. This performance highlights Changi’s strategic importance as a gateway for high-value, time-critical goods and as a key link between Asia, North America, and Europe.

Resilient Growth Across All Cargo Segments

Cargo growth at Changi Airport in 2025 was broad-based, with increases recorded across exports, imports, and transhipment traffic. The first three quarters of the year saw particularly strong volumes, driven by front-loaded shipments as manufacturers and logistics providers sought to mitigate supply chain uncertainties. Momentum continued into the final quarter, supported by sustained global demand for advanced technology products.

High-value and time-sensitive sectors were the main engines of growth. Semiconductors, electronics components, and equipment supporting artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and cleantech applications accounted for a significant share of cargo throughput. These industries depend heavily on reliable air freight services, and Changi’s efficiency, connectivity, and cargo-handling capabilities positioned it well to capture this demand.

Semiconductors and Advanced Manufacturing Lead Demand

The continued global expansion of AI-related infrastructure, electric mobility, and renewable energy systems underpinned much of the airport’s cargo performance. Semiconductor shipments, in particular, were a major driver of volumes, reflecting both strong production activity in Asia and steady demand from manufacturing hubs in the United States and Europe.

Beyond semiconductors, Changi also benefited from rising flows of precision equipment, pharmaceutical products, and high-value consumer electronics. These commodities require speed, reliability, and specialised handling, reinforcing the role of Changi Airport not only as a transport node but also as an integrated logistics and distribution platform serving regional and intercontinental supply chains.

Key Markets and Expanding Trade Links

China remained Changi Airport’s largest air cargo market in 2025, underlining the deep trade and logistics ties between Singapore and the Chinese manufacturing and technology sectors. The United States ranked second, followed by Australia, Hong Kong, and India. Together, these markets accounted for a substantial share of total throughput and reflected the diversity of Changi’s trade base.

The fastest-growing cargo markets during the year were China, the United States, and Taiwan, driven mainly by electronics, advanced manufacturing, and e-commerce-related shipments. This growth pattern confirms Changi’s role as a consolidation and redistribution hub, where cargo is transferred between regional Asian markets and long-haul routes to North America and Europe.

Strengthening Freighter Connectivity

A key factor behind Changi’s strong performance was the continued expansion of dedicated freighter services. In 2025, several airlines enhanced their operations at the airport, adding both capacity and new trade lanes.

JD Airlines launched thrice-weekly Shenzhen–Singapore freighter services, improving links with southern China and supporting fast-growing cross-border e-commerce and high-tech cargo flows. Turkish Cargo reinstated weekly Istanbul–Ho Chi Minh City–Singapore operations, strengthening connectivity between Europe, Southeast Asia, and China. These services enhanced Changi’s role as a bridge between major production centres and consumer markets.

FedEx Express further boosted long-haul capacity with new non-stop freighter services to Anchorage. This development improved transit times and reliability on the Singapore–United States lane, benefiting customers shipping high-value and time-critical goods across the Pacific. The expansion of freighter networks complemented existing bellyhold capacity on passenger flights, creating a more resilient and diversified cargo ecosystem.

Changi’s Role as a Regional Cargo Hub

Changi Airport’s 2025 performance underscores its long-standing position as one of Asia’s most important air cargo hubs. The airport’s infrastructure, digital capabilities, and integrated logistics community enable it to handle a wide range of cargo, from express parcels and pharmaceuticals to outsized industrial equipment.

The airport’s ability to serve as both a point of origin and a major transhipment centre is particularly significant. Cargo moving between Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America often passes through Singapore, where it can be consolidated, broken down, or redirected efficiently. This hub function allows airlines and logistics providers to optimise networks and respond quickly to changing trade patterns.

Entering 2026 with Strong Momentum

With diversified trade flows, expanding freighter services, and robust demand from technology-driven industries, Changi Airport enters 2026 well positioned to maintain its strong cargo performance. While global economic conditions remain uncertain, the airport’s focus on connectivity, service quality, and close collaboration with airlines and logistics partners provides a solid foundation for continued growth.

Changi’s results in 2025 demonstrate that air cargo remains a critical pillar of the airport’s overall business and of Singapore’s role as a global logistics and trading hub. As supply chains evolve and demand for fast, reliable transport continues to rise, Changi Airport is set to remain a key gateway for Asia-Pacific air freight in the years ahead.
