The world’s ten busiest airports are experiencing a robust rebound in 2024, with passenger volumes exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

The international aviation sector has formally recovered well

According to CNN, the worldwide aviation industry has formally made a significant comeback after years of interruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

A preliminary assessment from Airports Council International (ACI) projects that there will be around 9.5 billion passengers in 2024, which is 3.8% more than in 2019 and 9% more than in 2023. Passenger traffic has surpassed historical levels for the first time since the epidemic, indicating a long-term recovery of the global travel sector.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (USA)

With 108.1 million passengers, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (USA) is once again the busiest airport in the world. This is where Delta Air Lines, which has been ranked first for 26 years (27 years total), fell once in 2020 due to a decline in passenger volume. Atlanta’s airport has demonstrated impressive stability following the pandemic, despite being 2% lower than in 2019.

Dubai International Airport (UAE)

With 92.3 million passengers, Dubai International Airport (UAE) is the second busiest airport in the world. Dubai International Airport reaffirms its status as a major gateway connecting East and West by holding the second spot for the first time in 2023 and continuing to do so in 2024.

Dallas Fort Worth Airport (USA)

With 87.8 million passengers, Dallas Fort Worth Airport in the United States comes in third. It is anticipated that traffic at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport will rise by 17% in 2024 compared to 2019 levels and by over 7% in 2023.

Haneda Tokyo, Japan

Japan’s Tokyo Haneda, with 85.9 million passengers, came in fourth. Additionally, it is among Asia’s busiest airports. The regional market clearly recovered in 2024, as evidenced by Haneda’s 9.1% gain over 2023.

London Heathrow (UK)

With 83.9 million passengers, London Heathrow (UK) came in fifth place. With a 5.9% increase over the previous year, Heathrow, the top gateway in Europe, is demonstrating its importance as a commerce hub.

Denver (USA)

With 82.4 million passengers, Denver, USA, came in sixth place. Denver’s expansion of almost 19% over 2019 demonstrates the robust growth of domestic airports in the United States following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Istanbul Airport (Türkiye)

In 2024, Istanbul Airport (Turkey) will receive 80.1 million passengers, placing it seventh in the rankings. IST reaffirms its position as a center between the Middle East and Europe with its strategic location and robust infrastructural developments.

Chicago O’Hare (USA)

With 80 million tourists, Chicago O’Hare in the USA came in eighth. Even though this figure is still 5% below 2019, O’Hare is making rapid progress, rising 8.3% over 2023.

New Delhi (India)

With 77.8 million passengers, New Delhi, India, came in ninth place. Given that India is the most populous country in the world, it is evident that the aviation industry is expanding quickly, reflecting the rising demand for both domestic and international travel.

Shanghai Pudong Airport (China)

Lastly, with 76.8 million passengers, Shanghai Pudong Airport in China came in at number ten. From 21st in 2023 to 10th, this is regarded as the largest jump in the rankings. According to experts, China’s impressive development can be attributed to its open visa policy, a rise in foreign travel, and the robust Asian market rebound.

The aviation industry is expected to increase by 2045

The aviation industry is currently recovering, despite numerous obstacles like economic instability, geopolitical tensions, and aircraft manufacturer delays, according to Mr. Justin Erbacci, General Director of ACI World.

Long-term prospects are still favorable, though: “We expect global passenger traffic to double by 2045,” he emphasized. Along with developing economies in Latin America and Africa, the Asia-Pacific region—particularly China and India—is anticipated to continue to drive the new wave of expansion.
