Purchasing 50 more aircraft is Vietnam Airlines' minimal need
According to Vietnam Airlines’ Chairman, the airline has identified an oncoming time of significant expansion, therefore purchasing 50 more aircraft is a minimum requirement.
Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, gave this information during an extraordinary meeting on the afternoon of May 15 to review the plan to enhance charter capital and the project to purchase aircraft.
The government has approved Vietnam Airlines’ investment in 50 unsecured narrow-body aircraft. The national airline intends to purchase 50 Airbus A320 NEO or Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, as well as ten spare engines. The project’s total investment is roughly 3.7 billion USD (92,810 billion VND). This number is equivalent to 1.6 times the total worth of the company’s assets, according to the 2024 financial statement.
Vietnam Airlines’ Chairman stated that this is one of the company’s most critical initiatives. According to Mr. Hoa, the airline has recognized the next phase of recovery and network expansion, resulting in a high demand for aircraft.
Currently, the airline has a fleet of about 100 aircraft, including 65 narrow-body aircraft. However, the business anticipates that by 2030, it would require 95 narrow-body aircraft, 37 wide-body aircraft, and five ATR aircraft. By 2035, Vietnam Airlines will require 112 narrow-body and 52 wide-body aircraft.
Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa highlighted that the initiative to invest in 50 more aircraft is the basic requirement of Vietnam Airlines in light of the massive demand for commercial aircraft from airlines across the world. According to him, if the manufacturers are unable to deliver the aircraft to the airline by 2030, Vietnam Airlines may be forced to lease additional aircraft in 2027 and 2028.
During the meeting, shareholders approved the idea to issue shares to raise charter capital. Vietnam Airlines intends to expand its capital by an extra VND22,000 billion in two steps. Currently, the airline’s charter capital is approximately VND22,143 billion.
This year, the company will raise VND9,000 billion in its first round of funding. In 2026, Vietnam Airlines intends to raise its capital by VND13,000 billion. According to the company’s officials, this capital increase will aid in improving liquidity, improving the quality of financial indicators, lowering the debt ratio, and providing resources for the airline to build its fleet and implement long-term objectives.
