Air transport output for the Lunar New Year 2025 reached a “record” level, particularly at Tan Son Nhat, which for the first time exceeded 1,000 flights per day.

The transport of airlines during the Lunar New Year holiday period in 2025 (January 24 to February 2, 2025, or from December 25, the year of the Dragon, to the end of January 5, the year of the Snake) reached 2.5 million passengers (an increase of 17.8%); of these, 1.35 million passengers (an increase of 23%) were transported internationally, and 1.14 million passengers (a 12% increase over the same period in 2024) were transported domestically, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

Both domestic and international passenger numbers rose compared to the same period in 2024.

Over the same period in 2024, Vietnamese airlines carried approximately 7,000 tons of cargo, up 4%, and over 1.67 million passengers, up 12.8%. Over 536,000 passengers and over 3,600 tons of cargo were transported internationally, representing a 14% increase in passengers and a 1.1% increase in freight over the same period in 2024. Over 1.1 million passengers and 3,200 tons of cargo were transported domestically, representing a 12% increase in passengers and a 7.4% increase in freight over the same period in 2024.

Approximately 3.6 million people traveled through airports nationwide during this time, up 16% over the same period in 2024. This is an increase over the same period last year. At major airports, the number of passengers rose as well in comparison to the same time in 2024. In particular: Da Nang Airport had more than 381,000 passengers (up 26%), Noi Bai Airport saw around 900,000 passengers (up 12%), and Tan Son Nhat Airport saw about 1.38 million passengers (up 7.6%).

Tan Son Nhat Airport handled between 824 and 970 takeoffs and landings daily during the 2025 Lunar New Year vacation, with an average of 138,000 passengers daily.

January 24 (December 25, the final working day before the Tet vacation) was the top day, setting a record. Tan Son Nhat airport had 1,002 takeoffs and landings, up 10% from the same period in 2024, and handled 152 thousand passengers, up 13% from the same period in 2024. Compared to Lunar New Year 2020, this degree of exploitation was greater.

This is the first time Tan Son Nhat Airport has seen more than 1,000 takeoffs and landings per day, topping the peak of 988 flights in 2019 (prior to the COVID-19 epidemic), according to the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam’s licensed maximum of 48 flights per hour (slot) was attained during all three peak hours.
